Do the Chile volcano and New Zealand earthquakes portend a an increase in worldwide tectonic activity?

Another earthquake swarm has occured in Christ Church New Zealand at the same time that the Puyehue Volcano in Chile is still delaying flights in South America and New Zealand. These have occured on top of the Fukushima Earthquake in Japan and the two volcanos in Iceland that stopped airlines a year ago and more recently.

In fact we have seen more magnitude 8 or higher earthquakes during the past decade that in any other in recorded history. Our planet has gone through periods of active plate tectonics in the geological past. Some researchers wonder if this could be happening again particularly around the Pacific Ring of Fire that is being squeezed as the Atlantic Basin is growing wider. We will need years if not decades of more data to know if we have a legitimate trend, but it is something that has researchers rubbing their chins in wonderment and disbelief.
